Christmas Sled DIY

Writer's picture: Jasmine BrownJasmine Brown

This will be Rylee's first Christmas, so I decided to take pictures of her under my Christmas Tree. I wanted to take a picture of her on an old wooden sled and when I went to go price one out, it was so expensive. My fiancee' and I decided to build one instead with some wood that we had lying in the garage. The sled can also make a great decorative piece in your home for Christmas as well.

Materials:

  • Waverly Antique Wax

  • Red paint

  • Furrying Strips for top: 26" long, 1 1/2" wide, 1/4" thick

  • Wood for center rung: 13" long, 1" wide, 1 5/8" thick

  • Wood for legs: 41" long, 1 5/8" wide, 1" thick (read step for more details)

  • Small chrome screws

  • Long chrome screws

Assemble:

Step 1: Cut all your wood & paint / stain.

  • Make sure to start with a wider piece of wood for the legs so you can cut the tip. I used a piece that was 3 1/2" wide and drew the template of the legs onto the piece. The piece was cut down to 1 5/8" besides the tip.

  • Furring strips are cut on slant for tip and staggered for the top.

  • You can also get furring strips for the bottom at Home Depot. Furring strips are very affordable.

Step 2: Screw center rung to the legs using large screws. One screw goes on each end.

  • Suggestion: pre-drill all holes before putting screws in to avoid splitting.

Step 3: Screw the furring strips onto the center rung using the small screws. One screw goes on each end.

Stay tuned for Rylee's Christmas Photos on the sled!
